When I met her she had a boyfriend, which made things even easier, because I liked her right away but I wasn’t trying to impress her, wasn’t trying to do anything other than enjoy our new friendship. Later she left the man she was dating, and I told her she was out of his league. She showed me a few of her other boyfriends, it turned out she was out of all of their leagues. She told me in a roundabout way that she always played it safe: when she went rock climbing, one of her many pastimes, she wouldn’t jump for anything she wasn’t sure she could grab hold of; she was scared to fall.
